Saudi Arabia produces about 53 million tonnes of waste every year. By 2035, this is expected to grow to 106 million tonnes, due to rapid industrialisation, population growth, and urbanisation. Developing a more efficient waste management strategy and infrastructure was a major objective of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s economic overhaul plan announced in 2016. The Kingdom recycles no more than 10% of the 50 million tons of recyclable materials it produces each year, studies commissioned by the sovereign fund show.
